.Kava kava (Piper Methysticum) is a lush, leafy green member of the pepper family, from the tropical islands of the South Pacific. Kava kava whose Latin name Piper methysticum literally translates as "intoxicating pepper" has been used for centuries, by the inhabitants of the South Pacific Islands -as a ritual drink, a social beverage, and also as a medicine. In the west Kava kava has become popular as a supplement of tackling stress and anxiety.

A number of pharmacological studies have shown that the active ingredient in kava , kavalactones, produce physical and mental relaxation and a feeling of well being.

However, along with other countries, the U.K banned kava kava in England on 13 January 2003. The ban forbids the sale, possession for sale, offer, exposure or advertisement for sale, and the importation into England from outside the UK, of any food consisting of, or containing, kava kava.

Serious side effects.

The ban was introduced because of a number of cases of liver toxicity, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver failure.The occurrence of liver damage is both unpredictable and the mechanism is unclear.

There are about 110 cases of severe liver damage which have been linked to the use of kava kava. Of these 11 people have suffered irreversible liver failure and received a liver transplant. Nine people have died, including two who had been given liver transplants.

You can still buy kava kava via the internet from companies based outside the UK or Europe, however, these companies are very often unregulated and sell dubious strength, adulterated Kava kava.
